As we continue to absorb self-serving political ramblings and media coverage on coronavirus, especially this past Thursday, the day the earth stood still. In response to bad news everywhere, even engulfing beloved Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, I am reminded of Franklin Roosevelt’s address when the country was paralyzed by the Great Depression: “[T]he only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” FDR promised rational, frank and vigorous leadership, not rhetoric. Today, that translates to coordinated production and distribution of medical testing nationwide as well as accelerating development of a vaccine. The time is long past for actions, not words.
