Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to join 21 other states in no longer distributing the $300 per week federal supplement was the right move in the nick of time. Government assistance at a time in which the pandemic was raging and businesses had no customers made perfect sense. Federal unemployment benefits under this year’s American Rescue Plan did not. At a time in which employers are reopening their doors, they are faced with a new competitor – government – paying workers $14.38 per hour to stay home while 500,000 jobs go unfilled. 2020 was about staying home; 2021 is about getting back to work.
