A new election system rolled out in Alaska for the 2022 election may provide a productive proof of concept for Floridians to evaluate. Sponsored by Republican-turned-independent former state lawmaker Jason Grenn, the new system eliminates party primaries in favor of a nonpartisan system-wide primary resulting in a general election for the top four vote-getters. It has been argued that the current system biases towards extreme left of center Democrats and extreme right of center Republicans, engendering bitter partisan warfare. The new system is intended to promote the election of more moderate and collaborative officials closer to the center of the populace. Is a voter initiative in order?
