Orlando Sentinel’s Central Florida 100: AUTOMATION

It appears that the automation of jobs in response to the Great Resignation is probably not going to include servers in the food-service industry. A robot at Oviedo’s Playa Pizza brings food to diners, takes dirty dishes back to the kitchen and can even be programmed to sing “Happy Birthday” when delivering food. However, the robot is more costly than humans and it can’t really provide hospitality and handshakes – or what owner Stephen Facella calls “the human connection of dining out.” Maybe so, but at a time in which business continues to explore how to replace humans with robots, Facella’s experiment is an interesting data point in the process.
