In the midst of an impasse between some political leaders anxious to get the economy back to work and a wary public striving to stay safe, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings is striking the right balance by assembling a task force of medical experts and business leaders. However, standards must also be implemented statewide and soon. Three factors are critical: First, widespread availability of masks; second, widespread accessibility to molecular asymptomatic screening as a precondition to returning to work; and third, guidelines on protocols businesses must adhere to. Nobody knows what the new normal will look like, but these three are essential gateways.
