Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to double down on playing to his base as he begins the process of arresting and prosecuting 20 Florida felons – including three from Orange County – who allegedly voted illegally in 2020. According to the governor, this is the first step; however, it is manifestly evident that whatever the number of prosecutions, they are not remotely statistically significant in any type of election race. What is significant is the governor’s ongoing efforts to mobilize his base. Republicans cheered, of course. As a Republican, I did not. Election integrity is important but, by definition, it must be nonpartisan.
