SANFORD BURNHAM. In the midst of the hoopla and legislative finger-pointing, it is worth noting that economic development comes in all shapes and sizes. In 2006, the luring of Sanford Burnham to what was to become a life sciences cluster was intended to be a catalytic event designed not only for its own benefits, but as a magnet for the attraction of other high-tech, high-wage and high-growth employers. While it is certainly appropriate to examine why Sanford Burnham couldn’t make ends meet with massive public funding, we cannot forget that Tavistock’s 2006 initiative accomplished brilliantly that transformational objective and our broader community is the beneficiary of that vision.
