Winter Park Police Chief Michael Deal’s action in fully equipping his police department with body cameras, once the city had approved the budget for them, reflects a welcome sign of the times for law enforcement. The two Kenosha police officers involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake were the latest examples of police officers not wearing body cameras, making clarity as to what occurred more difficult to determine. According to the City of Winter Park, body cameras offer greater transparency, investigative expediency and more targeted training opportunities. It’s time for legislating that body cameras be mandated for all law enforcement agencies in the state of Florida.
