As Watergate celebrates its 50th anniversary, we are faced with a déjà vu moment. Watergate ended Richard Nixon’s presidency when White House tapes released to Congress after a bitter legal battle showed Nixon complicit in the burglary’s coverup. The current congressional investigation is not focused on former president Donald Trump’s coverup of a failed coup, but his actual involvement in directing it. Countless witnesses testified under oath that they promoted the Big Lie knowing it was a lie. Others testified that they refused to buckle under presidential bullying. All eyes now turn to those honest Republicans willing to declare yesterday a mess in favor of delivering a better day tomorrow.
