The decision by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Dan Eagle, Secretary of the Department of Economic Opportunity, to reinstate the job-hunting requirement as a condition of receiving unemployment benefits is a step in the right direction. When Florida’s $275 a week unemployment was upped by the Fed’s $300 a week, it was far more attractive to stay home for $14.38 per hour. Job hunting, however, is not the same as jobs. Fourteen states have decided to stop paying out the federal portion of unemployment benefits; it’s time for Florida to do the same. Unlike during the pandemic, jobs are plentiful. It’s now time for workers to take advantage of them.
