These are heady days for space travel. Elon Musk’s original vision was not to fly reusable rockets; it was to colonize Mars. Last week’s successful SpaceX launch represented another step in that direction. So too are the current efforts by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and a host of companies to build and launch deep space habitats for waypoints on the journey. As we look back five years and then forward another five, we find ourselves in central Florida to be one of a handful of epicenters fortunate enough to play a key role in what is turning out to be the modern equivalent of the 16th century’s Age of Exploration.
