With the shortened time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, just about all of us hit our keyboards for more of our Christmas shopping. In fact, as the numbers come in, what becomes clear is that online shopping, at over 17% of all retail sales, continues to devour the retail sector. 12,000 retail stores were shuttered in 2019 and current estimates indicate at least 75,000 more will follow suit in the next five years. The economic shift towards all things digital, however, is not just transforming consumer behavior but the workplace as well. With the service sector bleeding jobs, local policy makers need to focus on what matters most today: technology readiness.
