In 1959, Cape Canaveral – later renamed Cape Kennedy – was selected to launch the first successful test firing of a Titan Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. In 1965, Uncle Walt announced his plans to build “bigger and better” right here in Orlando. And in 1968, Commander Luis de Florez moved the Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics from Long Island to Orlando, setting up the tech explosion at what is now UCF’s Research Park. All three of these events, born within a decade of each other, were catalytic converters and economic drivers triggering massive prosperity for Central Florida. And all three can share the dais today as we rightfully celebrate the Magic Kingdom’s 50th Anniversary.
